Fly Designs Cashmara

Posted by Soxophone Player on October 13, 2009

I had a pleasant surprise in the mail a few weeks ago, from Pat Fly at Angora Valley.

:

This is a wonderful yummy-yummy-rub-against-your-tummy-est sock yarn! At 80% Merino 10% Cashmere and 10% Nylon, this beauty is a real treat for your feet!  And Pat says, ‘go ahead and put it in the washer AND dryer.

If you want to take your finger and run it across the picture above…that’s how smooth it is! And you can click the picture to see what other colourways Pat has in this yarn.

The yarn is 390 yards/4 oz. which is a little heavier than ‘yer Opals and Regias. (This is the SOCK version of the yarn, which is also available in lace or DK.)

Here is a pair of size Mediums, knit with the 54 needle cylinder on the Legare 400. With the wee bit heavier gauge of the yarn I loosened my tension just 1/4 turn from my normal 4 ply setting (= same as for a stiffer 4 ply),  and that was just about right.

I had lots of yarn left over but as this was my first kick at this yarn I couldn’t say if the skein would have done my larger sizes.

Most yarns of this weight, with my patterns, I’m usually able to squeak out a Medium+ but seldom a Large. (Bear in mind I use a double hem top in my standard pattern, which uses up the yardage!)

If Tencel is the poor man’s Silk, then I’d have to say that Cashmara is the poor man’s Qiviut.

I’m lovin’ it…

I managed to follow you over to your new diggs. Lookin’ spiffy.

I recently completed a pair of cashmere blend socks and I’m scared to wear them in my shoes. I wore them to bed one night and thought I detected the slightest pilling on them. Please tell me how these wear!

  2. I like the new site, too. Pat’s yarns are awesome, and this new blend is a delight — gotta get some for my stash, too :)

I have socks I cranked from Pat’s yarns over 4 years ago and they are still going strong. They are washer/dryer friendly.
    I haven’t tried the new blend……..

I’m thrilled enough with my first stab at Cashmara that I’m going try a few dozen in various colours. Pat is sending them out this week and I’m VERY excited!
