Old Legare Catalogue

If you didn’t see my post on one of the csm lists – I found an old P.T. Legare company catalogue on a Canadian government archive site.  I copied the cover and three pages the show the Legare sock knitter and saved them as a pdf file.  To see, click the link below.

The file is just under 3 megs – if you aren’t on high speed you may want to go knit a pair of socks while it loads!

(I first embedded this file in my post so you would see it directly, but decided the file size was too big and might muck someone up!)

  1. Fascinating. I wonder what all the gadgets are in the complete page. and I found the textures interesting on the last page.

BTW – it loaded lightening fast for me. :)

  2. I dunno if anyone is left on dial up or not. But I remember some painfully loads before high speed finally came to my rural corner!

I find old catalogues really interesting. In these pages, I especially liked the part where they were clobbering a cylinder with a hammer – to show how strong they are, but good to know for those of us that pop a gasket now and then ;o)

As far as I know the model featured post dates the two Legares that I have but there is little written about the Canadian knitters – all of which were made in Georgetown Ontario. There is a comprehensive review of the American models that was done as an ebook a few years ago, but he barely mentions Canada.

  3. “Let the children knit”, LOL. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!)

I have such an appreciation for people who were able to make these machines work using the instruction manual furnished with the machines in days of yore. I can imagine many a hair was pulled out before mastering socks, let alone silk underwear on a 120 needle cylinder!

I would love to lay my hands on an old P. T. Légare catalogue. There must be some great finds in there.

  4. I didn’t see any reproduction limitations on the Canada Archives site where I got this, so I presume its ok to copy.
